Dear Prospective Employee,

Thank you for considering Courthouse Academy as a possible future home! Courthouse Academy is a great place for staff and families alike.

Courthouse Academy serves students from infancy into elementary school in Spanish Immersion classrooms. Courthouse Academy is the premier Spanish Immersion school in the area. What does this mean? This means that our students who are enrolled in Spanish Immersion will be in a classroom with an English speaking teacher and a Spanish speaking teacher. Our students become comfortable understanding and communicating in Spanish and as they advance in grades they will begin to read and write in Spanish as well. In this increasingly global economy being bilingual will serve these children well in their futures.

The staff has the amazing opportunity to help students become the best they can be while becoming bilingual. You will become a member of a team that creates a world – class environment for our students and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are impacting the childrens’ futures in a positive way.

Does this interest you? If so, keep reading…

To be part of a world – class program, you need to be something special too. So, what do we expect of you?

We expect you to come to work:
-Excited every day to enrich the lives of the Courthouse students.
-Caring deeply that what you are doing is valuable.
-With an open mind to learn and share with team mates and students.
-Professional in manner, promptness, attitude and dress.
-Prepared to start your day.
-Prepared to interact with the students and engage in meaningful conversation.

My name is Kimberly Pomares and I own Courthouse Academy. It all began when I went in search of a preschool education for my
daughter. I knew what I wanted. I couldn’t find it, so I went out and created it. I opened the school in 1992, renting space in a church. The school started very small, serving fewer than twenty-five 2, 3, and 4 year-olds and has grown over the succeeding years. I developed a greater understanding of the importance of the preschool years after researching early childhood studies. I concluded that it was imperative to provide the highest quality experiences during the early childhood years.

My vision grew and I decided to create the only Spanish Immersion school in Virginia Beach.

In the Spanish Immersion classes one teacher speaks and teaches in English. The second teacher in the classroom speaks and teaches in Spanish. The education and welfare of children continues to be my passion. I want our children to become well-rounded, productive citizens. Becoming bilingual is part of my passion. It affords these children greater opportunities in the future. I know this because I have two grown daughters who are fluent in Spanish. Both are world travelers, have worked abroad, and now both work for an international company. None of which would have happened without Spanish.

In order for Courthouse Academy to be the best place possible for the children, it needs to be the best place possible for the staff!
Julie Salmon, Kathy Hoppe, and I all work hard to make Courthouse Academy a great place to work.
We work daily to live our culture:

We care about your dreams, ideas, thoughts, and opinions. Together, the entire staff makes a great team. We love great ideas and do everything we can to encourage and support you inside your classroom and out. The staff loves that Julie and Kathy’s doors are always open. Stop in, share what’s on your mind…

“I have taught Kindergarten at Courthouse Academy for the last 3 years and I can honestly say it feels like home. I like the fact that we come together not only for fun events but that teachers there are always willing to collaborate and share ideas for maximum student success. Teachers are always sharing supplies with each other as well. Julie and Kathy have been great to work for… They are invested in my classroom and my students and are always eager to stop in and see what we are doing! I can talk to them professionally and personally about anything. They always have a listening ear and offer support and encouragement and help in whatever way they can.” -Lisa Heiden Kindergarten

“I have been teaching Spanish at Courthouse Academy going on six years and I have loved every minute of it! I am a native Spanish speaker and I am immesely involved in the HIspanic community around Virginia Beach and Norfolk and therefore LOVE
the Spanish program they have for Students at Courthouse! I KNOW FIRSTHAND what a tremendous advantage learning a second language can be for my students. Teaching Spanish is so fun because you can act out animals, sing about the months,
and dress up while you teach about clothes! Kids are learning while having fun! The look of pride on parents’ faces as they see their child speaking, reading and singing in Spanish is also priceless!” -Jamily Trinidad Kindergarten
“I have been working at Courthouse Academy for almost 15 years. Working at Courthouse Academy with the children is very fulfilling and I especially love that we are an academic based school with a Spanish Immersion program. My Spanish Immersion four year old students get very excited when they are able to respond to a question with the correct answer in Spanish. Our Spanish program is a great beginning to nurture a blossoming bilingual child.” –Joy Bateson Pre-K

“I enjoy working at Courthouse Academy because of the atmosphere. It is a laid back environment, where we are always having fun and laughing. When your coworkers have become friends, work feels a lot less like work. However, our first priority is always the education, safety and love for the kids. My passion is education. At Courthouse Academy I am able to share my passion with my students and teach them in a fun and creative environment making them the teachers and me the student at times! Courthouse is the place for me and I hope to be here for many years.” –Liz Lewis First Grade

“The most valuable resource that all teachers have is each other. Without collaboration our growth is limited to our own perspectives.” –Robert John Meehan
“I chose this quote because it truly describes my experience at Courthouse Academy, as well as the method of how I run my classroom. I believe we have
something to learn from others and it doesn’t matter if they are young or old. I am committed to becoming a better teacher because of the wisdom my mentors have given to me. My own style of teaching is evolving and improving. One reason I wanted to become a teacher was because I enjoy learning and I wanted to share my passion with others. I feel a tremendous responsibility to develop and encourage the young minds in my classroom to find their love for learning too. I am proud to announce that I am not just a kindergarten teacher but I am a kindergarten teacher at Courthouse Academy.” –Meaghan Smith Kindergarten
“Working at Courthouse Academy has allowed me to grow my passion for working with children. I have a lot of experience teaching and my background in sociology and psychology helps me to adapt to each child and their needs. I adore teaching the pre-k class and the freedom that Courthouse allows. We love to explore new things, think out of the box and encourage creativity; all the while getting a private school education at an accelerated level. I appreciate the doors that have been opened for me, as well as the friends that I have made young and old! It doesn’t feel like a job if you love doing it!” –Kristin Watkins Pre-K

I have worked here for four years and have worked in the Toddler’s, Two’s, and Four’s rooms and have loved each and every one. All the teachers that work here are like a great big team who really support and push one another to have the best classes that we can at this school. The office staff is wonderful and always willing to talk to you about any problems you may have. The school is so great and I plan on coming back after I finish student teaching because I love it that much! -Alison Cahn Two Year-Olds
As the mom of two daughters who attended Courthouse Academy and as the 2 year-old Spanish Immersion teacher, I can honestly say that there is not a better foundation for your child’s academic career than Courthouse Academy! Each day I get to come and watch the children in my class grow as they learn. There isn’t a better feeling than walking down the hall and having your former students run up and hug you then whispering to their friends, “She was my teacher”, or when a parent tells you that their child saw a flag in a store and stood with her hand on her heart and recited the Pledge of Allegiance which you taught her. I consider myself VERY LUCKY to be able to work at Courthouse Academy. -Lorraine Henson Two Year-Old Spanish Immersion Teacher
